the earth finally died last night
of course no one noticed
and everything as before
went on bearing its archaic smile
and sense of incorrigibility
and vulnerability and subtle humor
it had had a good run
as far as earths go apparently
we who are left to assess
the terminal cases
who seem to have been infected
shortly after birth
refusing all medicine
fighting it alone
over a brief life
